In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, school districts are left without capstone standardized assessments to measure their progress on serving students of color. Districts also are searching for ways to determine where students will be starting as school year 2020-21 begins.
While this is not an equity-centered paper, it does provide actionable options for districts and states to measure student status as part of an equity-focused Return-to-School plan. The author appropriately places the onus of the challenge on the system of education, not the students [that is, the author points to “the loss of learning due to lost instruction,” rather than many other commentators who (wittingly or unwittingly) are less careful with language and place the onus on students].
